Meet Mary Lou Bruner… Candidate for a position on the Texas School Board

1Meet Mary Lou Bruner. She is in the running for an open position on the Texas School Board. Her stated qualifications are as follows:

  • M.Ed. in Special Ed. from East Texas State University (Now Texas A&M, Commerce)
  • BA in Elem. Ed. and English from Texas Wesleyan College – Fort Worth, TX
  • TX Teacher Certifications: Educational Diagnostician, English, Language/Learning Disabilities, Early Childhood, Kindergarten, Elementary Education, Special Ed. Counselor, All‐Level School Counselor
  • Worked 36 years in Texas public schools as a teacher, counselor, and educational diagnostician.

All good so far, right? Not so fast…

First,it would seem that she is both anti-evolution and anti-sex education. The following quote is from her campaign web site.

I believe schools should get back to basics by teaching phonics and grammar rules, by requiring students to learn multiplication tables, by teaching the theory of evolution as a theory — and not the only theory — and by teaching traditional math.  Health classes should teach about health and hygiene; health classes and children’s literature should not teach young children about sexuality issues.

She’s also made her other views and intent abundantly clear via interviews and many social media posts. (Which seem to have vanished now that the campaign is in full swing)

KCTV 5 News:

An example of one of these posts is the idea of global warming being created to spread Socialism.
Bruner says, “I am not ashamed of saying this because I know I am right.”

Or the idea that President Obama paid for a drug addiction in his 20’s through work as a male prostitute. “There is literature out there that says he paid for his drugs as a male prostitute… I don’t know. I guess, I’m assuming it’s true. Some people assume it’s false, who knows.”

Statements on Bruner’s Facebook page, that she stood behind during our interview, demonstrate strong anti-gay, anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim beliefs.

Bruner does say she would respect majority rules, if elected.”If I’m on the board, I’m a law abiding citizen and I will abide by what the majority of the board votes.”

The following quotes have been attributed to her:

On Evolution, School Shootings:

The school shootings started after government removed the Ten Commandments and the Bible from public school buildings, and disallowed prayer at school and school events. The school shootings started after the schools started teaching evolution is an absolute fact and the classes cannot talk about weaknesses in the Theory of Evolution. The shootings started after the schools started teaching the Constitution of the USA is a flawed document written by selfish aristocrats who were only looking out for their own wealth, The school shootings started after the government started teaching children to feel sorry for themselves if they do not have as much as other children in the school….

On Dinosaurs:

When the flood waters subsided and rushed to the oceans there was no vegetation on the earth because the earth had been covered with water. It took a while for grass and trees to grow back and the big plant-eating dinosaurs needed lots of vegetation to live. The dinosaurs on the ark may have been babies and not able to reproduce. It might make sense to take the small dinosaurs onto the ark instead of the ones bigger than a bus. After the flood, the few remaining Behemoths and Leviathans may have become extinct because there was not enough vegetation on earth for them to survive to reproductive age. Most of the dinosaur fossils which scientists have found are permanently preserved in positions of great distress as if they were trying to keep their heads above water or above the mud.

From her current Facebook page: (Oddly enough, a plethora of posts that used to be there seem to have gone missing)

Mary Lou BrunerTo the television reporter who asked me while the camera was rolling if I REALLY believe there was a man named Noah who built View full sizean Ark and filled it with pairs of animals, and the entire world was covered with water: THE ANSWER IS STILL “YES, I believe the Holy Bible. I believe there was a Great Flood. How do YOU explain fossils of seashells and other sea animals on tops of mountains all over the world? How do you explain the Grand Canyon? You are very naive if you believe a tiny river carved out the Grand Canyon. I believe it took a lot more water than that to carve out the Grand Canyon and other land and rock formations formed by water erosion. You can call me ignorant or intolerant or whatever you want, but I did not make fun of YOUR religion.

But HERE’S the one that puts her in the running for the Golden Tinfoil Hat Award for 2017…

“It is a goal of United Nation’s agenda 21 and the One World Order to reduce the population of the world by 2/3. That should cause people to wake up because to reduce the population more people have to die than are born. At some point it could mean that one of these methods of depopulation are in the Global plan: World War III, mass faminine, mass disease epidemic or pandemic, or Nuclear Bomb.

People, are you listening?” Dated May 15th, 2015

So, what do you think? Should she be one of the people in charge of the science and social studies textbooks in District 9 of Texas?
