Washington, D.C.

Hundreds of nontheists are expected to converge on Capitol Hill today and Friday as part of the Reason Rally Advocacy Days.

Hosted by the Secular Coalition for America, the Advocacy Days will bring nonreligious Americans from across the country to our nation’s capitol to lobby for secular and sciencebased public policy.

Attendees will receive advocacy training from 9am12pm before meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Participants will lobby members of Congress in support of the Real Education for Healthy Youth Act (REHYA), which would eliminate all federal funding for abstinenceonly education and reallocate
the money to support sciencebased sex education.

“We’re here today to send a message that lawmakers, politicians, and pundits can no longer relegate nonreligious Americans to the political sidelines”

said Larry T. Decker, Executive Director for the Secular Coalition for America.

“As the fastest growing religious demographic in the country, secular Americans are poised to become the next major voting bloc. We’re united by our shared values and committed to fighting for secular and sciencebased policy. By lobbying in support of sex education, we hope to show just one of the countless this emerging voting bloc can make a positive impact on
the political system.”

More than 225 nontheistic Americans from 42 states and the District of Columbia registered in advance to attend the Advocacy Days, though more are expected to register on site.

About twothirds of Congress will receive visits from nontheistic constituents and materials will be left at those offices where meetings could not be scheduled to ensure that every Congressional office is contacted.

“There are nonreligious voters in every congressional district throughout the country. By putting faces to their voices, it is our hope that lawmakers will recognize the importance of reaching out to this rapidly growing constituency”

Decker said.

The Advocacy Days will be held at the Washington Court Hotel, located on 525 New Jersey Ave NW, Washington, D.C.

Following the Advocacy Days, tens of thousands of nontheists will assemble on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for the Reason Rally, which will be the largest gathering of nonreligious Americans in history.
